Reading Explorers of the sunrise

Screenshot 2014-09-11 at 10.29.12 AM.png

Through the last three weeks my reading group the Slayers have been reading a story in a school journal about Explorers of the sunrise. This article is about how our ancestors from New Zealand sailed to Rapanui (Easter Island) and sailed back to New Zealand using the swells of the sea in the day and the stars through the night also the book is about the details waka they used. The first island they had sailed to was Tubuai then the next island that they sailed to was Mangarewa then the sailed to Rapanui. From Rapanui our ancestors sailed to Moorea, then Raro Tonga after they sailed the Raro Tonga they sailed back to New Zealand but then the place they stopped was at Doubtless bay.

What we have been researching is what the vocabulary is for ancestors, archeology, voyage, navigator and horizon. Then we had to write about what the article was about after that we had to find a map online and use, a document called google draw and draw the journey they went on. After we had done all that work we had to draw the waka they went on for the journey and label the parts of the waka for example the one I have above. The thing we had to write about was what technology we use now since our ancestors have used the swells and the stars.

What is colour

What are primary colours? Screenshot 2014-08-22 at 10.10.43 AM.png
Primary colours are colours that can’t be made by other colours those colours are red, blue and yellow. Primary colours are used you make other colours and those are secondary colours. The warm colours in Primary colors are yellow and red. The cool colours in primary colours are blue. So last week Class 5 did a colour wheel the first colours we painted were primary colours, then we mixed the primary colours to make secondary colours, we painted those on and then we mixed secondary colours and primary colours to make tertiary colours, then we paint that on to the colour wheel and left it to dry. After the paint dried we drew shapes to show what the primary colours are what the secondary colours are and tertiary colours. The shape we used for primary colours were triangles the shape we used for secondary colours were squares and the shape we used for tertiary colours were circles.

What are secondary colours?
Secondary colours are made by primary colours getting mixed together to make orange, green and violet. green is made up by blue and yellow, orange is made up by red and yellow and violet is made with the two colours blue and red. secondary and primary colours can be made into tertiary colours. The warm colours in the secondary colours are orange and the cool colours in secondary colours are violet and green.

What are tertiary colours?
Tertiary colours are made with the primary and secondary colours the names of these colours are  yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, red-violet, red-orange and yellow-orange these are the tertiary colours. The warm colours in the Tertiary colours are red-orange and  red-violet  and the cool colours are blue-violet, blue-green and yellow-green.

What are warm and cool colours?
The warm colours are red-orange, red-violet, yellow, orange and red. The cool colours are blue-green, blue-violet, yellow-green, blue, green and violet. Another task we did was a warm and cool colours task we had to do was a buildings one where we had to draw some buildings and then we drew the, background as a sunset we had to pick if we wanted cool or warm colours for the, sunset and the buildings what I did was cool colours for my sunset and warm colours for my building. The first thing we did was paint the sky cool or even warm colours. Then we did the buildings the colours we chose after we had finished we had to wait until it dries and then we had to get black paint and go over the lines we drew in the beginning.

The Sound Activity

On Tuesday I learnt about sound and making sound on an online science lab. What I did was try to match the pitch. I made the sound waves big and small. The small sound waves make a high pitch and the big sound waves make a lower pitch. Sometimes in the activity the pitch makes and high note or a low note. How I did the activity is I moved the arrow to a line and checked what sound it made by pressing the hand. When I thought that it was the right pitch I pressed the check button.

My Holiday Event

YMCA Shakespeare Camp

On Sunday the 27th of April my uncle , my sister and I  hopped on the bus at the War memorial park saying our last bye to our grandparents before we leave. Afterwards when we got in the bus we waited for the bus to leave. Just before the bus driver start the bus, I saw my uncle put his headphones on and start his music ready for the long ride. When everyone was ready the bus driver started the bus and and left. On the long ride to North shore to pick up some more people for the camp and then got to Whangaparaoa Peninsula Army Bay, Shakespear Regional Park where the camp is.

When we got to the camp we got our bags and went inside their hall ( Reck hall ) and sit down. When we sat down we were put into our separate cabins with different people my sisters cabin was cabin 2, my uncle's cabin was cabin 9 and my cabin was cabin 10. My sister was in the junior groups and

On the first day we had been put into groups yellow, red and green I was in yellow and my uncle was in green when we got put in our groups we went on the courts that gave us enough time to make new friends the first day I made one friend and then at night I ended up friends with everyone in my cabin. While we were on the courts our instructors called out to have afternoon tea  the afternoon tea was a drink with a biscuit. After we had our afternoon tea we had played a little more and then our instructors made all the seniors go to our meeting places to know what are our new activities are then the seniors followed an instructor and his name is Owen we followed him through the bush and then a few minutes later he said he was lost then another instructor came and told him where to go then he showed us the way through the bushes to the grass on the beach.

When we got to the beach we sat down in a circle and went  around the circle saying our names and what we like to do. After we learned everyones name we played a game when we all hide before 25 seconds and the seeker stays in on spot and try to see if the they can find anyone and if they do they have to describe what colours and kind of clothes they are wearing. The seekers can turn around looking for other people and if you get caught you have to go next to the seeker and sit down the seeker is not allowed to move and the the seeker will start counting down from 20 and we will have to run down and hive five thier hand and run and hide again then the seeker will count down lower and lower until there are no hiders left.

Badminton Session

Badminton

Today my class were told that we were doing a badminton session today at 9 we all were so excited. Before we went out to go do our session we did some work then at 9 our teacher said pack up your work and line up outside. We lined up outside and our teacher took us to the hall to our badminton instructor Robbie.

When we went inside the hall we sat down in two straight lines. Before we started our lesson Robbie wanted our class to warm up so he told us that we are going to play a game of stuck in the mud for a warm up. After we played our warm up game he told us to sit down and he will tell us the basic rules about badminton. One of the rules were no hitting people with the racket. Two is no using the rackets as a sword. After we learnt the rules Robbie handed out everyone a racket each. When we got our racket he showed us the two basic ways of holding the racket one name is backhand and the other is forehand when we learnt how to hold our racket he gave us a shuttle each and then we all practised hitting the shuttle with both ways holding the rack as long as we can.

After we had our try hitting the shuttle we got in pairs and practised hitting the shuttle to each other. Then the whole class had a competition in our pairs hitting the shuttle to each other my pair lost and a pair of two girls won then we played another round a pair of boys won that round. After that [round we packed up our rackets and shuttles and headed to class.

Fia Fia

Fia Fia Night

On Wednesday the 9th of April our school had Fia Fia. For our Fia Fia our school got put in different groups. The group I performed in was the Cook Island group. Before Fia Fia night our groups had to  practice our dances. The first thing my groups learnt was our chant. The first line to our chant was “Taku Reo Kapiki” then the second line was “Te Tangi O Te Tokore” after that line the boys had to chant “Te Tane” and next the girls had to chant “Te Vaine”. When we learnt our chants our tutors taught us our dance. Firstly the girls formed three lines and the boys formed two lines then we started practicing our dance. The next week our tutors taught the Cook Island drummers there beat and how to drum it. While they practiced doing the drums the dance group kept on practicing our dance. On the last week we practiced our dance and the drummers played their drums.

On the big night my uncle, my brother, my papa and I went to Fia Fia when I got to school I looked for my friends and walked around with them until we had to got to class. While we walked around Mr Burt rang the bell for all our groups to go to class and get ready for our performance. When I got to my class I grabbed my costume and got dressed after we got dressed our tutor did our hair and then we put a lei in our hair and a lei around our neck and then our teachers pour some oil in our hands and we rubbed it on our skin. When we were ready we sat down and our teachers told us to have fun and dance our best.

After our teachers talked to us we waited for Mr Burt to ring the bell and tell us to come and sit down in our places. While we waited we watched a lot of great performances like Samoan, Maori and Red remix. Once my group was up I felt really nervous and then I head the drummers drum beat and then we started dancing. After the dance I felt really proud of myself because I went up on the stage and I think did the performance great.

Tamaki College Year 8 Open Day

Last week on Thursday I went to Tamaki College to experience what we will learn at their school. Every year 8 got separated into separate groups. In the groups there were 4 different other schools in our groups we went to different classes. My first Class was Social Studies in Social Studies I had get into a group of four and we had to make a presentation on what our school would look like and how would we do ours one person in our group suggested that we can only wear converses for our shoes and we all agreed.

This  is what we got to do when we designed our dream school. The next class I went to was Science what we learnt in Science was what a Paramecium was and they are these little germs that wriggle really slowly. Then the Science teacher made us look through the scopes to look at three different things one was cheek dust and plant root and then last was the Paramecium. Then after we finished with learning about a Paramecium the Science teacher showed us this cool Science thing when he made a liquid turn a flame green.

After we did Science we went to Mathematics what we had to do in Mathematics is make a alien mask using the X and Y coordinates. First we drew the alien head and then we drew the eyes and the nose and mouth, after we drew it we cut it out then after we cut, it out we cut one hole on each side of the mask and tied a string to the sides. When I looked at my mask after I finished it, it looked small and if I tried to put it on it would have broken.

The next class I did was Graphics what we did is we learned  how to make a pop out card the teacher handed out the materials we needed and then he taught us how to make a pop out card. What we did was that we cut out the shape that showed on the the paper, and then we glued the shape to the middle and waited for it to dry. When the glue dried we opened our card up and saw that it looked like a crocodile face and then we drew a crocodile face on the card.

The last class I did was English what we did for English is that we had to read a story about how the world began. After we red the story we had to write a recount about the story and after we wrote our recount we had to share our work with the teacher. When we had finished we would have to wait for the others to finish but unfortunately I didn't get to finish my recount.

All about me

Kia ora my name is Jazelle, and I am a Year 8 at Point England School. I have three sisters and one brother, I live with my Grandparents. I have so much fun staying at my grandparents because we do a lot of things.

What I did for the holiday is that I went to my parents house for three weeks and while I was there I went to the zoo and to the festival of lights and at the festival of lights I saw a sleeping giant, a glowing chair, a waterfall filled with colors and a path full of glowing neon rocks and tiles.

After we went to the festival of lights we went home and went to sleep because its was really late. The next day I stayed home and played on the ps3 and I watched the television and then I went outside and played with my sister and brother. After my three weeks at my mums house I went back home to my nans house. When we got to my nans house I went inside and said “hi” to everyone after I said hi to everyone I played outside with my brother and sister.
